Looking forward to your annual holiday may be clouded with the worry of having to travel with your kids. Even though your children may be as good as gold while at home, a disruption to their routine may cause all kinds of problems. Depending on how old your kids are, and how you are travelling determines how stressful your trip may be, for example, flying with a baby is never the best of experiences, or having a toddler who gets travel sick can be upsetting for all of you. If planning a holiday which means travelling with your kids, take note of these tips to make your trip as stress-free as possible…
• Prepare your children with the thought of travelling. One thing children may not respond well with is the element of surprise. Make sure your children are aware of where they will be travelling to and how they will get there. It may be a good idea to get hold of some books about the resort/country you will be visiting so the child can build up some excitement about the place, and may make them calmer when travelling.
• Pack cleverly. Buy a selection of travel games and books to keep your children busy while travelling, however don’t give them to them all at once. Give them one toy/game per hour to keep up their concentration and so they don’t get bored. Also, pack a variety of medication for the children just in case, such as travel sickness tablets, children’s paracetamol, and more importantly, water. It is vital to keep hydrated as travelling can really take its toll on the body.
• If flying, it may be best to book a night flight so your children have the opportunity to sleep while travelling. This will help to keep your children in some form of routine, and will mean that they will be refreshed upon landing.
When travelling with children it is crucial that you take out holiday insurance. You can get cheap travel insurance if you shop around, so make sure you make yourself aware of the market. Use a travel insurance comparison tool to get the best deal for you and your family.
