The Barro Colorado National Monument can be found in Lake Gatun which is in the Panama Canal. This is a must on your visit to Panama.
The island was formed more than one hundred years ago when the Panama canal was being constructed. When the dam on the Chagres river was built it flooded the area that is now known as Lake Gatun. The island was declared a biological reserve and is the home of a research laboratory which was the first tropical rainforest biological reserve in the world. In the late 1970’s a few more areas of the mainland were added to the reserve and at that point it was declared a National Monument.
